MISSION
The Laboratory was established by
Decision No. 24006, Government Gazette Issue B ‘2070 / 04.06.2019.
The mission of the “Design and Development of Innovative Knitted Textiles and Garments” (DIKNIGA) Laboratory is to support academic and research activities related to the phases of design, engineering, optimization, manufacture and quality control of fabrics, garments and industrial products. The lab is focused on issues related to research and development of innovative textile products (fabrics and garments), research and development of new sustainable technologies for garments’ design and manufacturing, design of knitted fabrics using digital technologies, sustainability and cyclic economy, design and development of smart materials, smart technical textiles and multifunctional garments. Research is also conducted in the areas of detail product design, 3D parametric modeling, CAD and CAGD of industrial products and garments. The laboratory supports a large number of academic courses related to the aforementioned fields, undergraduate and postgraduate diploma theses, as well as Ph.D. dissertations.
ROLE AND ACTIVITIES
Laboratory has mainly educational and research activities and more analytically:
- Implementation of research activities and design-conduction of courses (at the laboratory’s research fields) in undergraduate and Master level, at the Industrial Design and Production Engineering Department.
- Supporting of Phd and Postdoc research at the subjects, which are relevant to the DIKNIGA laboratory’s fields.
- Αdvancement of educational and research collaborations in UNIWA, between academic staff members and researchers with relevant or supplemental research fields of expertise.
- Collaboration with Research Centers and Academic Institutes in Greece and abroad, when there is a common research area and consequently common targets, in a spirit of reciprocity and collective work.
- Cooperation with governmental public sector, local authorities and social-scientific-vocational institutes, with international organization and industrial units with relevant scientific fields, so as to contribute to the exploration of solutions and recommendations to the contemporary problems.
- Providing of consultations for issues which are included to the expertise of the laboratory, complying with the legislation.
- Providing of services to industrial units or to public sector, complying with the legislation. Decision No. 159/1984, Government Gazette Issue A ‘53 / 27.04.1984.
- The constant effort for receiving funding from national and international resources, so as to implement research activities.
Following the development trends of the global textile world, the laboratory is dedicated to the teaching, learning, research, and developing of the modern textile applications.
LABORATORY FACILITIES
DIKNIGA laboratory consist of individual rooms, where there is the necessary equipment and devices for the supporting of the specific research objects, like design and manufacturing of knitted fabric/garment, development of innovative textile products, etc.
Following the development trends of the global textile world, the laboratory is dedicated to the teaching, learning, research, and developing of the modern textile applications.
STAFF OF THE LABORATORY
Professor at the University of West Attica, with a PhD on Textile Sensors, specialized in Technical Textiles with an emphasis on Intelligent Garments and Sustainable Technologies.
Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of West Attica, with a 15 years industrial career in the textile and electronics sector.
Professor in the Department of Industrial Design and Production Engineering, School of Engineering, UNIWA, whose research work has found industrial applications in the footwear, clothing, and jewelry sectors.
Emeritus Professor of West Attica University with over 20 years Industrial Textile Experience specialized on Fabric and Garment knitting Technology and in Quality Control and Product Development.
Assistant Professor at University of West Attica, Greece, Architect Engineer AUTH, PhD NTUA, MSc NTUA.
Faculty member, Textile Technologist and with a Master in Electronic Commerce specializing in Mass Customization in Textile industry at Kingston University in London.
Computer Systems Engineer with postgraduate studies in Telematics (Tele-Informatics) Management. He has Long-term experience in the development of smart garments and wearable computer systems.
Administrative Head of UNIWA Quality Assurance Unit, who has been working for the PUAS for more than 20 years. She holds a PhD in e-government, a diploma in Civil Engineering and a Master in Education and Computing.
Postdoctoral researcher and teaching staff with experience in Environmental Technology, biotechnology, metal recovery, waste management, circular economy & renewable energy sources.
A long-term scientific collaborator of UNIWA, working for the Chemistry Laboratories of the Greek Naval Forces being specialized in Quality Control of materials and in establishing technical specifications.
Postdoctoral researcher with a demonstrated history of working in Education and Lifelong Learning. She explores new technologies and consumer attitudes for a more sustainable fashion.
PhD Candidate in the field of sustainable antimicrobial and antiviral coatings. He is a Textile Engineer, with a Master’s Degree in Quality Management and R&D professional experience.
Postdoctoral researcher and teaching staff with experience in Environmental Technology, biotechnology, metal recovery, waste management, circular economy & renewable energy sources.
PhD Candidate in the field of sustainable textiles, agricultural waste and circular economy. She is a Chemical Engineer (NTUA) and with a MSc in “Environment and Health.
PhD Candidate studying triboelectric effects on textile materials, with a MScR in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, a BSc in Textile Engineering and a 16years industrial experience.
Doctoral researcher at the University of Stirling and Associate Lecturer at the London College of Fashion at the University of the Arts London with research and professional experience on e-sensory textiles.
Architect, who has been collaborating with UNIWA since 2019 and until 2022 she was member of the Laboratory Teaching Staff. She has also worked with the University of Florence and University of Aegean.
Administrative staff of UNIWA with a long-time experience in European projects and participations in many European projects. She is a Textile Engineer (BSc) with MSc in Industrial Automation.
Ioannis Chronis is a Laboratory Teaching Staff at the School of Engineering of the University of West Attica.
Dr. Vasilia Peppa is a postdoctoral researcher and a teaching associate at the Department of Industrial Design and Production Engineering in two modules.
