Visit to Australia by Professors and researchers of DIKNIGA Lab (UNIWA) in the frame of Erasmus Mobility activities (4/7/2022-10/7/2022)

In the frame Erasmus Mobility activities Prof. Georgios Priniotakis (Industrial Design and Production Engineering Department), along with Research Associate Dr Athanasius Tsoutseos, visited Universities in Australia.
During their visit, the UniWA team met with research groups, established scientists, MSc and PhD candidates, in order to map the areas of research of each group and underlined potential areas of collaboration.
The analytical program was the following:

4th July 2022
Visit to the Institute of Frontier Materials of Deakin University Melbourne.
The highlighted activities of the day were:
– Presentation of Dr Emma Prime (Manager of Strategic Research) of research activities at IFM
– Teaching practices
– Laboratory tours and relevant research projects
– Analysis by Dr Dylan Hegh (Manager of Circular Economy) on projects relating to his field of expertise
– Presentation by Prof. George Priniotakis of UniWA research projects and the operation of DiKniGa
– Meeting with the Short Polymer fibre team
– Meeting with Prof. Rangam Rajkhowa specialised in biodegradable products made of textiles and especially silk fibres.

5th July 2022
Visit to the Institute of Frontier Materials of Deakin University
The highlighted activities of the day were:
– Meeting with Prof. Weiwei Lei and Dr Dan Lui whose group is specialised in advanced flexible materials, nanomaterials and membranes with special applications in novel flexible batteries
– Meeting with Dr Chris Hurren and presentation of his laboratory specialised in motorcycle protective clothing.
– Meeting with Dr Maryam Naebe and her group specialised in wool and textile related innovative products
– Meeting with Prof. Jingliang Li and his group specialised in wool based materials for water purification and energy generation.
– Meeting Carbon Nexus group. The meeting involved touring of the extended carbon fibre research laboratories and production facilities.

6th July 2022
Visit to the RMIT University – Meeting with Carolina Quintero Rodriguez
Dr Rodriguez gave an extensive tour of the RMIT facilities along with a presentation of the relevant research projects. Subjects related to novel textile related curricula were discussed in areas of Fashion and Design, Fashion Management and Sustainable Innovation.

7th July 2022
Visit to A2I2 Institute of Deakin University
A2I2 is a leading reseach centre on Artificial Inteligence applications in Australia. Co-director Mr Con Mouzakis along with Dr Irene Logothetis gave an extensive tour of the facilities. Real world problems’ solutions via AI were discussed with special focus on benefiting people with dementia and healthcare applications.

Visit to RMIT – Meeting with Professor Rajiv Padhye and collaborators
During the visit Prof. Priniotakis discussed the details of organising the AUTEX International Conference in Melbourne in 2023. Additionally, research areas involving smart textiles, sustainability and forensics were examined.

8th July 2022
Final visit to IFM – Meeting with Professor Joselito Razal and his research group.
Highlights of the meeting were:
– Presentation of research leaders.
– Smart textiles applications
– Carbon fibres and composites
– Biosensors
– MXenes with cellulose fibres
– Novel membranes with photo-electro-calalytic properties.
– Electrically functional fibres
– Roadmap of research collaboration between UniWA and IFM/Deakin.
